Choosing the right logistics provider

It becomes increasingly baffling to understand the different layers of logistics. Managing logistics functions internally is equally advantageous for companies, as much of the time, however, by placing logistics function internally, they are taking the focus away from their business operations. The right logistics provider can often provide a better balance in the supply chain, reduce costs and ultimately can help alleviate coordination and visibility issues. In this section, we are examining the logistics providers impact on the supply chain by looking at a dairy producer by the name of Jake:

First Party Logistics (1PL)

In 1PL, the dairy producer is in control of the entire logistics process moving goods specifically from his farm directly to end consumers. 1PL should be the lowest cost option since the logistics solutions are managed in-house by the customer. However, this also indicates Jake needs to manage an entire logistics department and have the expertise and equipment available internally to execute end-to-end logistics.

Second Party Logistics (2PL)

In a 2PL model, Jake relies on a contracted transport provider to move his goods from point A to point B.

This stage provides the customer with economies of scale, in turn using a network to use assets resonating across customers.

This might involve utilizing courier services, rail transport, ocean freight, or trucking—depending on the specific segment of your supply chain.

Third Party Logistics (3PL)

In this case, Jake entrusts a portion of his logistics operations to an external service provider under contract.

A 3PL provider manages multiple aspects of the supply chain at scale, extending beyond transportation to include services like warehousing, inventory management, and fulfillment.

The 3PL service provider will also have other services that allow him to manage services like book the transportation, documentation, warehousing and packaging.

For Jake’s example, the 3PL service provider would be capable of packaging his dairy products and storing them until delivery, and the transportation service would also be included too.

Fourth Party Logistics (4PL)

He has engaged a service provider (4PL) and entered into a long-term contract for the service provider to take over Jake’s logistics process.

There is not the need for a full logistics department in house, trucks/trailers, or the need to build logistics capabilities that allows for more efficient use of time allowing customers to focus on their core business.

A 4PL delivers comprehensive supply chain management, combining the expertise and capabilities of a full-scale logistics function. Acting on behalf of the customer, the 4PL also oversees and coordinates the activities of various 2PL and 3PL providers to ensure seamless execution across the supply chain.
